One very idealistic working group that might appeal to many here is the 'GAIA' working group ( ) - Global Access to the Internet for All - which brings folk in from all over the world. It employs no lobbyists (that I know of), but is dedicated to the users. The IETF is an incredibly egalitarian, not-pay-to-play organization still guided by the ideals of the original, open internet, with an open governance model, but often struggling with the conflicting demands now placed on it. The 'RFC' documents it produces, that glue the internet together, have nearly cracked 10000, now, dating back to the late 80s. There are hundreds of working groups producing fascinating new, interoperable technologies like post-quantum cryptography, and/or laboring in the details of getting the basics of DNS, webrtc, or DDOS prevention, exactly right. The #IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) is the non profit, mostly volunteer, standards development organization (SDO) that (along with the #IEEE) attempts to steer the enormous number of #technologies connecting the internet together, so that they actually work, when you plug something into something else, be they #broadband or #cellular, or #WiFi.
